The GMR and JSW Groups, co-owners of the Delhi Capitals franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL), have announced significant changes to their management structure. This comes as Sourav Ganguly transitions from his direct involvement with the IPL team to a broader role, directing cricket operations for both the Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 league and the Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
Ganguly, the former India captain, will serve as the director of cricket for the next two years, stepping aside as GMR Group takes full control of the Delhi Capitals franchise. Meanwhile, Y Venugopal Rao and Hemang Badani will take charge of the team’s cricketing operations. This strategic change aims to enhance operational efficiency across both men's and women's teams.
Despite stepping back from direct IPL involvement, Ganguly will still participate in the IPL auction, albeit in a limited capacity. Decisions regarding player retention and auction strategies will be made jointly by the GMR and JSW Groups, maintaining Ganguly's influence in these key areas.
As for Rishabh Pant, the franchise is awaiting his decision on whether he wishes to be retained, as discussions are currently on hold due to his national duties. There is optimism that he will continue with the franchise, but questions about his captaincy will be addressed once a decision on his retention is made.
In a joint statement, the groups expressed their commitment to optimizing cricket operations within the Delhi Capitals umbrella, which will see a rotation of control every two years. The GMR Group will oversee the men’s team for the next two years, while the JSW Group will handle the women’s team during this period.
