Amelia Kerr made a sensational debut for the Sydney Sixers, and with Ellyse Perry continuing her strong form with the bat, the Melbourne Stars were convincingly beaten in a rain-affected clash at the Junction Oval.
The match, reduced to 18 overs per side due to rain, saw the Stars get off to a blazing start with Ines McKeon hitting two sixes, racing to 16 off 7 balls before Ellyse Perry broke the partnership. Sophie Ecclestone, the standout bowler for the Sixers, made a critical impact by dismissing Meg Lanning and Yastika Bhatia, leaving the Stars struggling. Skipper Annabel Sutherland, alongside Marizanne Kapp, tried to stabilize the innings, but just when the duo looked to accelerate, the Sixers struck again. A run-out of Kapp triggered a collapse, and the Stars ended their innings at a modest total of 122/7, with Ecclestone taking 3 wickets and Kerr contributing 2.
When it came to chasing, Kim Garth provided early hope for the Stars by dismissing Sarah Bryce quickly. However, Perry’s scintillating form continued as she, alongside Kerr, ensured the required run rate stayed under control. Kerr, returning from injury, looked in top shape and played a crucial role in the chase. Perry and Kerr added over 100 runs for the second wicket, bringing the Sixers to 104/1 in just 15 overs, comfortably ahead of the DLS target. Unfortunately, rain once again halted play, declaring the Sixers winners.
With this win, the Sixers join the top spot alongside Sydney Thunder and Perth Scorchers, though they have played an extra match.
